The best way to overcome sadness about summer’s end is to celebrate the next season. Over the next few weeks, plant societies, botanical gardens and horticulture programs throughout the Bay Area will be hosting fall sales featuring California natives, edibles, ornamentals, annuals and perennials. At many of these events, plant experts will offer advice.

“This is definitely the best time of the year to buy plants,” says Pete Veilleux, owner of Oakland’s East Bay Wilds Native Plant Nursery, one of the featured stops during the Bringing Back the Natives sale next month. Plants put in the ground now will be able to take advantage of the approaching rainy season.
