Figs, which range in color from pastel green to deep mauve, are often overshadowed by the season’s more glamorous fruits – bright berries or juicy plums and nectarines.
The ugly duckling of summer fruits, figs are indeed stunning, once you know where to look. Slicing into a fresh fig reveals a vibrant pink meat, and tasting a good one can put many of late summer’s more quintessential flavors to shame.
